For years, hashtags have been a key part of many LinkedIn strategies. They were once seen as a “growth hack” to boost reach and attract new followers. But times have changed, and so has the role of hashtags – unfortunately, in our view at Digital Works.
What’s the current status of #hashtags?
- LinkedIn has removed the option to follow hashtags, and their visibility in the newsfeed has decreased
- The algorithm now places much more emphasis on content quality, engagement, and relevance – not on which hashtags you use or follow.
Should we stop using hashtags?
Not necessarily. Hashtags aren’t dead – they’ve just changed their function.
Now, it’s no longer about reach but about structure and signaling value:
- Hashtags make it easier for readers to quickly understand what your post is about
- They can help the algorithm slightly better understand the context
- You can use them to build a consistent brand identity (e.g., #WeAreAmazon)
- They can be used mid-sentence for visual effect (#topicfocus) – though at Digital Works, we don’t use them this way ourselves.
What hashtags no longer do:
- They don’t get you more views
- They don’t help you reach new followers
- They no longer function as a search tool for content inspiration.
Conclusion
You don’t need to stop using hashtags, but use them thoughtfully. Choose 1–3 relevant hashtags and let them support your content rather than dominate it. Forget about inventing creative hashtags like # #lovingthedanishsummer25 and instead focus on creating value through your words.
